Scripture Union Daily Guide 12th August 2025 Outline

The chief priests and the Pharisees were familiar with the writings of the prophets. In this parable of Christ, they could recognise God’s complaint against Israel through Isaiah the prophet. Isaiah 5 is a beautiful, sad song about God planting Israel as His Vineyard. In spite of careful tending, it proved to be unproductive. And so, God said, “I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed …” (Isaiah 5:5)

Here, God is the Master who planted His word in the world and asked Israel to guard it. From time to time, He sent prophets to demand an account, but Israel had a habit of maltreating them (Matthew 21:35-36). In a dramatic prediction of His own death, see how Jesus ended the story in Matthew 21:38. You and I, as Gentile believers, are the other tenants to whom the Master now entrusts the two-edged sword of His word (Matthew 21:43). To adapt a Swahili proverb, “Whether the sword falls on you or you fall on the sword, you are the one that suffers.” (Compare Matthew 21:44). God’s word is bound to triumph in the end
